Cherryville conquers challenge

Cherryville Elementary students have taken a stand when it comes to protecting water.

Uta Van Ziffle’s kindergarten class has won the Okanagan Basin Water Board’s WaterWise Challenge for a multi-media entry.

“The kids seem very connected to the land here. We think about water and the environment all the time in our classroom,” said Van Ziffle.

“We recycle, we have a garden and a rain barrel to help water the plants. We’re raising salmon from eggs and will be releasing them. The kids understand that we need to keep the water clean for the salmon and everything else we use water for.”

The submission included photographs and paintings.

“We looked at the WaterWise website and gathered ideas there,” said Van Ziffle.

“They loved the website and the videos. Once they started checking those out they didn’t want to stop.”

The WaterWise Challenge was part of Drinking Water Week.

“We were so excited to receive such fantastic entries,” said Corinne Jackson, OBWB’s communications director.

“We were looking for entries that provided ideas to save and protect water, and entries that were unique and inspiring. This class did exactly that.”
