With the number of local cancer patients more than doubling in the past 10 years, the need for additional space and services is long overdue.

Which is why this year’s Fairway Gala and Golf Tournament will pair Predator Ridge Resort with an important community cause – Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

The charity classic event takes to the greens at Predator Aug. 11 and 12 in support of cancer care at VJH.

“The first two Home Hardware Charity Classic events, held in August 2010 and 2011, netted $335,000 that purchased medical equipment for the new Polson Tower,” said organizing chairperson Val Harrison. “The Tower of Care Campaign is complete but needs at the hospital are ever growing.”

Each year, Vernon Jubilee Hospital receives more than 3,500 visits from local patients who have received a cancer diagnosis; this is more than double the numbers seen as little as 10 years ago.

Currently, the McMurtry-Baerg Cancer Centre is expanding into space vacated by the ICU and Cardiac Care units. This expansion has allowed for the addition of a second medical oncologist, Dr. Mike Humphreys, who will assist Dr. Ed Hardy with cancer care and treatment needs.

The two-day event supporting the cause starts with a Fairway Gala, under a huge tent, sponsored by Graham Construction Saturday night.

Dress code for the night is more casual than a traditional gala, but there will be no lack of the fine food prepared by the chefs at Predator Ridge. CBC news anchorman, Tony Parsons, will emcee the jam-packed program.

The Vegas-style golf tournament swings into action Sunday with a shot-gun at 1 p.m.

“There will be lots of fun activity and thanks to Predator Ridge’s generosity there will be an astonishing $10,000 prize table,” said Harrison. “Talent and low scoring won’t necessarily guarantee that you will walk away with the prizing.”
