Armstrong celebrating food and farms

Food and farm will be celebrated in Armstrong this weekend.

The Armstrong Food Initiative Society is hosting an outdoor food film festival at the community garden behind the caboose on Smith Drive today and Saturday.

The weekend culminates with a self-guided open house farm tour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at participating area farms and businesses.

The event kicks off tonight at 7:30 p.m. on International Save The Bees Day with Nick Kicey of Eagle Rock Berry Farm demonstrating his mason bee boxes.

There will be asparagus tastings and health information with raw and grilled chefs Afke Zonderland and Harvey de la Salle.

Films to be shown at dusk will be Pollen Nation and Fresh.

Saturday night’s movies include Bokashi, and Dave Weatherill of Briteland in Vernon and Karen Truesdale, who appears in the movie, will be discussing the Bokashi fermenting experiment.

The other movie shown Saturday at dusk will be Dirt.

Village Cheese Company, Rogers Foods and Chocoliro will host product tasting both nights.

The open house farm tours offer a variety for everyone.

Participating are Armstrong Asparagus, who will hold tours and tastings; Caravan Farm Theatre will have horse drawn buggy rides and live music; Rosebank Farms, where people can sample smoked chicken and visit baby chicks.
