Three decades in geoscience and water resources management have been recognized for a Vernon man.

Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC), representing the province’s engineering and geoscience professionals, presented Dr. Brian Guy with the C.J. Westerman Memorial Award, British Columbia’s highest award for contributions to the geoscience profession.

The award recognizes Guy for his technical excellence, leadership, and professional and community service contributions.

Over his 35-year career, Guy established himself as a water resources specialist, project manager, and business leader. In 1994, he founded Summit Environmental Consultants Ltd. in Vernon, growing the company to become a leading environmental consulting firm in the Okanagan, before merging with the Associated Engineering group of companies in 2010.

“Brian’s integrity, dedication and commitment to creating resilient solutions to our clients’ problems in a sustainable and environmentally sensitive manner is an example for us all,” said Kerry Rudd, president and CEO of Associated Engineering.

As a water resources specialist, he participated in the Okanagan Water Supply and Demand Project Partnership - the most extensive water supply and demand assessment ever conducted in Western Canada.

Guy made significant contributions to the development, leadership, and support of important technical organizations, such as the Canadian Water Resources Association and the Okanagan Water Stewardship Council. He also sponsored several community organizations such as the Okanagan Science Center and the Maven Lane Childcare and Early Learning Centre.

“Brian’s contributions to the water industry is exemplary,” said John van der Eerden, Associated Engineering’s vice-president, water resources. “He continues to play a key role in the understanding and management of Canada’s water resources and environment.”

The Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia President’s Awards are the province’s top awards for professional engineers and professional geoscientists recognizing the outstanding professional, technical and community contributions made by its members.

The C.J. Westerman Memorial Award was established in 1994 and is EGBA’s premier award in professional geoscience.
