Slopes for Hope was another success.

The second annual event at Silver Star Mountain Resort attracted 71 participants and raised $17,297 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

“Vernon has such an enthusiastic ski and snowboarding community that I felt this event was a perfect fit for the region and a great opportunity to raise funds for a cause that touches us all,” said Christian Ouellette, event chairperson.

Teams challenged themselves to ski or snowboard the vertical height of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest (29,029 vertical feet). Funds raised through the event will help the society fund cancer research, prevention initiatives and support programs for people facing cancer.

“Our volunteers and community really came out in spades this year to support our event. We were blown away by everyone’s commitment to the cause,” said Sarah Anne Taylor, the society’s annual giving co-ordinator.

“There were such brilliant and hilarious costumes heading down the Comet, and smiling faces everywhere. We just loved watching everyone have fun on the slopes and taking pride in the impact they’ve made for those affected by cancer.”
