An antiques business may soon open in Spallumcheen.

Township council gave unanimous first and second readings to an application that would allow JC Kehler Holdings Ltd. to amend the zoning bylaw.

The applicant, John Kehler, is proposing to use the property at 3699 Powerhouse Road, at the intersection of Highway 97A, for the retail sale of antiques and collectibles with a total floor area of 1,820 square feet.

The proposal needs an amendment to the zoning bylaw as it would not comply with the uses permitted in the C.2 highway and tourist commercial zone.

“It is intended that the retail sales of antiques and collectables would occur with in the bottom level of the existing commercial building with a second storey dwelling unit to be occupied by the owner, operator or employee,” wrote planner Kerri Clark in a report to council.

The existing building was previously used for commercial retail activities, and Kehler’s application would not change the siting of the driveway access and parking.

Favourable consideration for the application was recommended by staff.

A public hearing on the matter will be held at a date to be announced later.
