The Cowboys Choice in Vernon will commemorate its 40th year as a leading B.C. Western lifestyle retailer with a special event starting Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Being in business for several decades is an accomplishment that calls for a celebration.

That’s why customers are invited to stop in for a visit, enjoy some tasty treats and cowboy coffee.

In addition, there will be daily giveaways, storewide discounts, a gift with purchase and some good old fashioned fun.

And with the holidays just around the corner, it’s the perfect opportunity to grab that cowboy hat or boots, shirts and more for the Western guy or gal on your list.

The Cowboys Choice offers the largest selection of Cowboy boots in ‘the Valley’ – many of them are made in Canada. One will also find an extensive selection of men’s’, women’s’ and kid’ apparel, including jeans, outerwear, belts and many unique fashions.

Let’s go back in time and take a closer look at this booming small business that’s steeped with history.

The History of Cowboys Choice

It was 1976 when Vern and Mona Elliott came to Vernon to manage the Daines Western Store at Village Green Mall.

Over the years, they expanded and opened additional locations in Kelowna and Kamloops.

The Vernon store proved to be the most successful due to their loyal customer base of over 25 years.

Vern and Mona decided the mall space was just too small as they had outgrown it, so after some discussion, they decided to move to a new location 13 years ago.  They also gave the business a new moniker – The Cowboys Choice.

While business was booming, Mona became ill after a few years after the move.

The decision had to be made  – they sold their business in 2010 to Tim and Karen Cooper.

Introducing the Coopers

“We are so honored to be able to carry on the legacy that Vern and Mona built together,” said Karen, who has owned the business with her husband for six years, continuing to offer customers a unique shopping experience.

Over the years, Tim has worked hard to become the only hatter in B.C.

He not only cleans and refurbishes hats, he also makes custom hats.

With this unique service, Tim has expanded the customer base of The Cowboys choice to include customers from North America and Australia.

At any time, one can enter the store and see Tim steaming away creating a new masterpiece.

“Whether it is a custom-made hat, or a custom shape, Tim and the staff will make sure the customer's hat is perfect and just right for them,” added Karen, also crediting their dedicated long-term team for the longevity of the business – they employ five staff members, two of which have been there for many years.

“Barb Ferrier has been with us for over 31 years and Corrie Stachiw for over 25 years.”

The Cowboys Choice is located in Vernon at 7851 Hwy. 97.
