There are carols about the holidays being touted the ‘most wonderful time of the year’ that are oh-so ‘merry and bright,’ but you don’t hear catchy tunes about it being hectic, stressful, costly and dangerous to one’s waistline.

Let’s face it: this time of year can feel like anything but a celebration for some – especially those who suffer with S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

Fortunately, there are healthy ways to beat the case of holiday humbugs, according to the jolly team over at Simply Delicious in Vernon.

Here are just five ways to survive the holidays in one piece.

1-Beat the Bloat

Tired of looking like the man in the red suit after a plate of pasta? Candy Shane suggests tossing a bag of Kaslo pasta into your grocery cart during your next visit to the store.

“This delicious healthy pasta is made using natural sourdough culture – a one of a kind offering of fermented pasta,” he said.

2-Avoid the Sugar Jitters

Nanaimo bars and butter tarts and candy canes, oh my! Tis’ the season for sugar overload, which can cause havoc on one’s diet, complexion and nervous system. Thankfully, Ho Ho Haley has a handy tip to curb the cravings for the sweet white stuff.

“Keep some dried fruit and nuts around for extra vitamins and omega fats to keep you out of the candy dish,” she said.

3- Hit Me With Your Best Shot

Monique Navidad suggests a delicious beverage made by pressing fermented veggies called Gutshots to ensure you’re feeling fa-la-la-la fabulous this holiday season.

Gutshots are a great start to the night before Christmas or the day after,” she said, noting they come in some tasty varieties.

“Flavours include ginger beet, original and kimchi!”

4- Keep Your Cool

The Christmas Season can really get a lot of people down, says Daphne Through the Snow, who sees more people with S.A.D. and symptoms of depression combined with stress this time of year.

We recommend a B-complex during times of stress,” she said.  “In particular, B6 supports the production of serotonin in the brain.”

5- Don’t Worry, Be Happy

For those feeling a bit on the ‘Scrooge’ side, Patricia You A Merry Christmas suggests slipping some 5-HTP in your stocking.

“A derivative of tryptophan, and one step closer to the neurotransmitter called serotonin, 5-HTP has been found to be effective for treating sleeplessness, depression and anxiety, “ she said.
