At the beginning of May the world was informed that 82 of the almost 300 schools girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in Nigeria more than three years ago had been released.

CBC reported that 24 of rescued students have returned to their studies through the American University of Nigeria.

Their passion to continue their studies demonstrates that even terror cannot get in the way of a desire for education.

Currently, 263 million children are out of school.

In low-income countries only one in three children will learn basic primary skills and only eight per cent will have the opportunity to continue to secondary level skills. Quality education is a human right and a key component of ending poverty across the globe.

The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) works with local and international governments to strengthen education worldwide. Since founding in 2002 the GPE has helped more than 64 million more children attend primary school, with a 15 per cent increase in girls completing primary school.

Canada’s pledge to the Global Partnership for Education must reflect its position as a global leader and its commitment to decreasing poverty worldwide.
