Recycling program a concern

Over and over again seniors and people with disabilities complain about this totally unacceptable recycling arrangement.

Over and over again seniors and people with disabilities complain about this totally unacceptable recycling arrangement.

Last week only one of my blue boxes was taken away and the other left with a notice that said “paper/cardboard not in separate collection box from cartons and plastic and metal containers.” They were right. A few cardboard things were in the box like a few toilet paper rolls and a paper tower cardboard roller. Is this really important enough to refuse the pickup? I now have a month’s supply in this box, probably too heavy to safely lift for the collector and a smelly dirty blue box sitting on the curb for a month. Wow! Does this make sense?

I am a senior with mobility issues that make it difficult for me to sometimes move never mind trekking out to the curb when I have a recyclable item so I keep things in a plastic bag on my porch and if I am lucky enough to have a neighbor or relative around, I ask them to put these articles in the blue bins. Sometimes they screw up. What will I do? Fire them? We need a solution to this ongoing problem from our elected representatives, not snotty responses from the pickup company.

This blue box pickup system has been discriminatory for people with disabilities from the get-go and despite the many complaints and advice given from the disabled community nothing changes. We are all good at paying lip service to saving the environment but in my estimation most of us who truly want to recycle don’t even have the opportunity with this blue box pickup system. Many of my acquaintances now just put it in the garbage. It is so much easier.
