Thanks to a year-end field trip, Grade 6/7 students in the Late French immersion program at Harwood elementary school had the chance to work on their language skills outside of the classroom.
Grade 6 late French immersion teacher Lisa Priel recently arranged for a trip to Bouchons Bistro in Kelowna. The owner of the classic French bistro, Stéphane Facon, was open to the idea of students coming in for a tasting.
“I was thrilled when he said yes and he worked with his chef to design a unique tasting menu just for us,” said Priel. “The restaurant is not open for breakfast or lunch and so they opened just to provide this experience for our late French immersion students.
“Stéphane even did what he could to ensure that all the staff working with us that morning were francophone or French-speaking.”
During the exclusive French culinary tasting session, students had the opportunity to sample traditional French foods, including frogs’ legs and snails, goose liver paté and fresh-baked baguette as well as some traditional pastries for dessert.
“They also heard a few words from chef Luc Bissonnette and got to experience restaurant service ‘en Français’ in an elegant French bistro setting,” said Priel.
