Assault sends woman to VJH

An alleged domestic assault has landed a Vernon woman in hospital and a suspect behind bars.

A 22-year-old woman, with injuries to her face, head and neck, was taken away on a stretcher from the 2900 block of 29th Street Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

RCMP later caught up with a suspect at a Vernon residence, but had to call a hostage negotiator in to get the suspect to come out of his home.

“He just didn’t want to come out,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson.

Molendyk added that while there was no hostage involved, officers were cautious due to concerns that the suspect could have a weapon.

“That’s still a dangerous situation.”

The situation was resolved peacefully and the suspect exited the residence brandishing a broom that mimicked a rifle.

The suspect was arrested and transported to Vernon cells.

Gerry Cobel, 53, of Vernon appeared in court Thursday and now faces charges of assault, aggressive assault, assault of a police officer, breach of undertaking and carrying/using/threatening to use a weapon.
