Regional document endorsed
A regional approach to future development has the blessing of the City of Vernon.
Council has unanimously supported the regional growth strategy proposed by the Regional District of North Okanagan.
“It provides a balanced vision of how we’ll accommodate growth,” said Coun. Buffy Baumbrough.
The strategy provides a long-term vision for development and growth in the region over the next 20 years.
Among the issues identified in the document are rural lifestyles, agriculture, economic development, transportation, housing and energy.
The strategy was created through consultation with various stakeholders and North Okanagan residents.
“City staff have been involved in the development of the document over the last three years,” said Cleo Corbett, Vernon’s long-range planner.
“The strategy is consistent with Vernon’s official community plan. Any concerns brought forward by Vernon council have all been addressed.”
The strategy is currently being reviewed by all local jurisdictions, and Baumbrough says it’s important that all communities participate in implementation.
“Together, we are able to look at the big picture,” she said.
Corbett is also hopeful the document will move ahead.
“It’s a partnership among all of the jurisdictions for the future and vision of the North Okanagan,” said Corbett.
When final input from member jurisdictions is received, the RDNO board of directors will consider any possible changes to the growth strategy and then adoption.
