Forums feature trustees
With the civic election just around the corner, members of the public will have the chance to hear from the candidates running for trustees in the Vernon School District.
The Vernon Teachers’ Association and the District Parent Advisory Council are sponsoring two forums focusing on current education issues.
On Tuesday, an all-candidates’ forum takes place at 7 p.m. at the Schubert Centre, with trustee candidates for the City of Vernon and Areas B (BX-Swan Lake) and C (BX-Silver Star).
On Wednesday, Lumby and area residents will hear from their three candidates hoping to represent Village of Lumby and Areas D (rural Lumby) and E (Cherryville).
That forum will be at 7 p.m. at the White Valley Community Centre.
“While there are obvious current issues such as the labour dispute, there are other long-term education issues such as chronic under funding, involving parents in decision-making and so on,” said VTA president Bruce Cummings.
“The intent of hosting these forums is to educate and encourage voters to participate in the election of trustees.
“Voters should know that the Vernon School District has a budget of over $80 million and makes a significant impact to the local economy.”
The Vernon forum will be moderated by VTA vice-president Kevin Bader, with Devon Tyssen moderating the Lumby forum.
There are seven candidates running for four spots in Vernon and area: John Armstrong, Jim Hart, Tami Ryder, Kelly Smith and incumbents Mollie Bono, Steve Connor and Perry Wainwright.
In Lumby, three candidates are vying for two spots: incumbent Paula Harned, former trustee Mitzi Fortin and newcomer Doris Squair.
