New red light camera for city
Motorists running a red light may want to smile at a busy Vernon intersection.
The intersection of 32nd Street and 43rd Avenue is now part of B.C.’s upgraded and expanded intersection safety camera program.
“We welcome these cameras because high-risk driving has no place on our roads and we’ll do everything we can to stop those who disregard other people’s safety,” said Jamie Graham, B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police traffic safety committee chairperson.
“We’ve seen the carnage of intersection crashes and we know this program will help make our roads safer.”
The cameras detect and photograph vehicles running a red light, and are expected to reduce casualty crashes at ISC sites by about six per cent annually.
All ticket revenue goes to municipalities.
Violation tickets carry a $167 fine, which can be reduced by $25 if paid within 30 days.
Vehicles entering the intersection before the light turns red will not receive a ticket.
There has been a camera at 32nd Street and 25th Avenue for a number of years.
