RBC Cup expands donation drive
The committee that seeks to bring the RBC Cup to Vernon in 2014 is making it easier for Vernon citizens to contribute to the costs of bidding for the prestigious tournament.
Persons wishing to help the bid committee defray the costs of bringing the tournament to Vernon can now donate at a downtown location.
Hockey fans can continue to donate at Viper games, but now they can also contribute at the Sun Life Financial office at 209-2411 Highway 6, just behind the Tim Hortons location. The office will be open for donations, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
An online contribution site will be added in the near future.
The donations made to the bid committee will count as a down payment on tournament ticket packages.
“We have three cost elements,” said local committee co-chair Mike Lane. “The bid must be accompanied by a fee of $2,500 and a surety of $5,000, and there will be travel costs when we present our case to Hockey Canada.”
A $20 donation will place the donor’s name in a draw for an all-access VIP tournament package. Multiples of $20 will gain additional chances to win the VIP package and one of two 2012-13 Viper season ticket packages.
Also, each $20 donated will entitle the donor to a chance to win a signed Aaron Volpatti jersey, or a Vipers jersey signed by the team.
“So far, we’ve received support during Vipers games at the Wesbild Centre and we’re very pleased with the response,” added committee co-chair Chris Collard. “More than 200 people have stepped up to the plate. However, we’re still short of our goal. We want to make it easy for people who want to support but can’t make it to a Vipers game in the next while.”
Collard said small businesses are also welcome to make donations and contribute toward ticket packages that they could use for customers or staff.
Lane suggested that if the number of contributors grows to 350 or 400, Vernon would have a very strong case to present to Hockey Canada.
“We want to demonstrate the excitement that’s building here, just like it was in 1990 when Vernon last hosted,” said Lane.
