Vernon Winter Carnival festivities begin in full force
It’s time to be active for the next 10 days.
Sporting with Carnival kicks off today and runs until Feb. 12.
“Things are looking great,” said Brittany Sjoblom, Vernon Winter Carnival executive director.
Among the events today are the coronation of Queen Silver Star at Polson Park at 5 p.m., the Hot Air Balloon Glow at Polson Park at 6 p.m. and the snow sculpture competition at Silver Star.
On Saturday, there is the parade downtown and on 27th Street at noon.
“The parade is always on the top of many people’s minds as they either prepare their float, or prepare for getting a good spot to watch the parade,” said Sjoblom
Also on Saturday, there is Bandarama at the recreation complex at 2 p.m., and the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Festival at the Performing Arts Centre at 8 p.m.
Downtown Vernon will be a flurry of activity during Carnival.
The fourth annual broomball tournament will run from Monday to Wednesday, with games at both 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. each day.
“We are very excited to have 14 teams participating in the tournament again this year,” said Holly Schmidt, Downtown Vernon Association events and marketing manager
Broomball action will take place on 31st Avenue and 31st Street near Cenotaph Park.
The following streets will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.: the 3000/3100 block of 31st Street and the 3000 block of 31st Avenue.
On Feb. 11, the chili cook-off will get underway.
“The Chili Cook Off is a great way to get out and experience some new and not so new restaurants in downtown Vernon,” said Schmidt.
“Just $2 gets you a sample of chili at each participating restaurant and you get to vote on your favourite chili and chili team.”
Chili passports are on sale at the Carnival office, the DVA office, KT’s Restaurant, Kal Sports Bar, the Shack, Rosalinda’s Filipino Kitchen, the Sprouted Fig, Nature’s Fare Markets and Crush Bistro.
All proceeds from the event will go the Community Dental Access Centre.
“Parking will be free downtown Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. and Feb. 11 from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for the broomball tournament and chili cook-off,” said Schmidt.
