Road safety scrutinized
Pedestrian concerns in an Okanagan Landing neighbourhood are being investigated.
City of Vernon staff will consider options to improve safety for residents walking on Okanagan Landing Road at Myriad Road.
“It’s not safe to get across the road there,” said Coun. Mary-Jo O’Keefe, adding that vehicles frequently speed in that area.
An 118-name petition recently asked the city to build a pedestrian bridge across the creek on the south side of Okanagan Landing Road, near Myriad Road.
Presently to walk east into Vernon, people must jaywalk across Okanagan Landing Road before the creek and then go on to the crosswalk to get on to a walking path.
Annexation bid denied
Keeping friendly with the neighbours appears to be more important than expanding city limits.
Vernon council has denied an annexation application for three properties on Silver Star and Star roads to be annexed into the city.
“A sense of co-operation with the regional district is pretty important,” said Coun. Juliette Cunningham.
The Regional District of North Okanagan has asked that applications be put on hold while the long-term implications of annexation on electoral areas are studied.
City staff initiated the application because the three properties received sewer — which generally triggers annexation — when Silver Star Road was realigned in 1997.
Mayor Rob Sawatzky points out that the owners of the three lots weren’t part of the process.
“Those people didn’t ask to be annexed and they are ambivalent about it,” he said.
Portion of Lakers lot for sale
The City of Vernon is looking to dispose of some real estate.
Council has approved the subdivision of the former Lakers Golf property on Cummins Road into two lots.
The clubhouse will be kept for community use, but a new 35.9-metre-by-68.5-metre lot will be rezoned four-plex residential and sold through a public process.
