Youth caught damaging trains
Two youth are in trouble for damaging a spot that’s been plagued with problem vandalism.
Vernon RCMP responded to the Kelowna Pacific Railway yard in the 2800 block of 27th Avenue Saturday at 7:30 a.m. for a report of two youth smashing windows on the parked engines and other machinery.
“The two youth, aged 12 and 13, one from Vernon, the other from Coldstream, were arrested,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “Damage was done to an engine window and a window of a machine that inserts and removes railway ties.”
The cost of the damage to the two machines is between $500 and $1,000.
“The rail yard has experienced extensive damage from previous mischiefs,” said Molendyk.
The pair have been recommended to be dealt with through a program operated by the Restorative Justice Society – North Okanagan.
“That’s probably a great way to handle the young offenders,” said Molendyk. “Restorative justice is much quicker, and the repeat rate is very low with those who go through the program. This will be a good use of that program.”
