Township closes road

The Township of Spallumcheen has voted to close a portion of a road due to safety concerns.

The area of concern is on Ford Road near Hitt’s gravel pit.

“We received a complaint from a concerned citizen that the road didn’t look safe, that the down slope into the gravel pit looked straight up-and-down,” said Spallumcheen public works manager Ed Forslund.

“I had a geotech come in and do an analysis and he wasn’t happy with the slopes so council voted to close a portion of the road.”

The move comes under a township bylaw that gives the public works manager the authority to close, restrict or divert traffic from a section of road deemed unsafe or unsuitable for traffic.

The closure is in effect until further notice, and Forslund believes the move will have little impact on the people that live in the area.

“There are only four residents on the west side of the road and they can access their properties from Knob Hill Road,” he said.
