Jail time for cadet instructor
A military judge sentenced a former instructor at the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre to a year in prison for sex-related offences.
The judge sentenced Capt. Daniel Moriarity to 12 months in jail, dismissal from Her Majesty’s service and reduction in rank to the rank of 2nd Lieut. in relation to various sexual offences committed against two cadets in 2010 and 2011.
The judge also ordered Moriarity to provide a DNA sample and to comply with the Sex Offender Information Registration Act for life.
Moriarity is appealing the decision and has been released from custody though he must obey a number of conditions.
Standing court martial proceedings against Moriarity began on Oct. 15, 2012, at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt in Victoria.
On Oct. 18, the court martial found Moriarity guilty of four offences: two counts of sexual exploitation; one count of sexual assault; and one count of invitation to sexual touching.
The incidents for which Moriarity was charged occurred in Vernon and at a cadet corps in Victoria.
