A tireless community booster has been recognized.

Akbal Mund has been named Vernon's 2012 Good Citizen of the Year.

"I had no idea, none, It's kind of a shock," he said.

Mund's accomplishments include chairperson of the 2012 B.C. Winter Games and organizer of Wendy's Dreamlift Day,which sends children with life-threatening illnesses to Disneyland.

Among the other groups he has been involved with are the Vernon Soccer Association, Funtastic, youth soccer, KidSport and the Salvation Army.

"I do it because it's the right thing to do and to give back to the community," he said of his volunteerism.

Mund is also known for organizing silent auctions and fundraising dinners for various organizations.

"He is a willing, intentional volunteer who gives with all of his heart to the community to make it a better place to live and work," said Cindy Masters, with the Kindale Developmental Association.

The Good Citizen of the Year Award is sponsored by Junior Chamber International's Vernon's chapter.
