Cougars are being blamed for the deaths of three dogs in Grindrod.

The Ministry of Environment started receiving reports of cougar attacks in the Grandview Bench area in mid-January.

"It's normal cougar behaviour," said Brent Smith, a conservation officer.

"They see dogs as prey. They prey on coyotes regularly so it (dogs) is not a leap."

Two dogs have been killed by cougars while a third dog had to be euthanized by a veterinarian because of extensive wounds. Four other dogs were also injured.

"There was a human injury when a person separated a dog and a cougar. It was a minor injury," said Smith.

On Feb.10, a 100-pound male cougar was tracked and destroyed while a second 100-pound male cat was killed Feb. 11.

"To date, there have been no further reports regarding cougars," said Smith.

Residents are urged to be aware of the presence of cougars and to keep an eye on their pets.

"If you are in an area where cougars roam, it's possible they may target a pet or livestock. They are out there," said Smith.
