Cause still unknown in Greater Vernon landfill blaze
What caused a devastating fire at the Greater Vernon landfill may never be known.
Flames roared through the recycling facility March 1 at about 9:30 p.m.
"We are still trying to determine the area of origin," said Jack Blair, a deputy chief with the Vernon Fire Department.
"There was so much damage so it makes the investigation a tough one. For us, it could go down as undetermined."
The Regional District of North Okanagan's curbside recycling collection program will continue and material will be collected in a building at the landfill. It will be taken to a Kelowna company for sorting.
"For our customers, there is no change in service," said Nicole Kohnert, manager of regional engineering services.
The Greater Vernon landfill remains open for anyone needing to get rid of household waste.
