Small sinkhole appears in downtown Vernon
Sudden sinkholes have been disastrous in some communities, but one in Vernon is being described as minor.
The City of Vernon was notified by a resident Tuesday that a sinkhole had developed east of the 30th Avenue roundabout, at the edge of a sidewalk.
"They will occasionally occur near a creek crossing," said James Rice, public works manager, adding that there is a creek in the area.
The hole was about three feet wide and seven feet deep.
Crews were on scene Wednesday filling and packing the hole.
"The road is safe for travel and we will keep a close eye on it," said Rice.
On Monday, a large sinkhole developed under a resort in Florida.
