Fire cause remains unknown
It’s still not known why flames roared through two Vernon homes.
Investigators have been on scene since two residences were destroyed in the 2200 block of 53rd Avenue at about 5:15 a.m. Tuesday. But a cause has become elusive.
“We are close, very close, but we can’t prove it because of the damage from the natural gas,” said Lawrie Skolrood, a deputy fire chief with the Vernon Fire Department.
“We have reports coming from experts that we want to see first. There are pieces of the puzzle missing and there are people we still need to talk to.”
While it’s not believed the cause was suspiscious, that hasn’t been ruled out entirely by the department.
There is no damage estimate yet but the structures were serverely impacted by the blaze.
The occupants — a couple in one home and an individual in the other — were not injured. They received help from Emergency Social Services for the first 72 hours.
