Accident shuts down highway

No one was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident that closed Highway 97 south of Bailey Road for a time Saturday afternoon.

Vernon RCMP officers responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash at about 3:20 p.m.

“An older Toyota Celica was northbound when his vehicle began to hydroplane and was going sideways in the southbound lane when it was struck by a Toyota Tacoma,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.

The truck hit the car just behind the rear wheels and the impact sheared the back end of the car off.

Everyone in the two vehicles was wearing seatbelts and nobody was seriously injured in the crash.

“There were three people in the truck, a husband and wife, 39- and 37-years-old, and a two-year-old,” said Molendyk. All went to hospital to be checked out for injuries.”

The lone male driver in the car is 58 and from Vernon. He was not injured but is facing possible charges in connection with the accident.

The road at the time was full of water due to heavy rain.

“Even one of our officers on his way to the scene said he had to slow down and adjust his speed because of all the water on the road,” said Molendyk.
