Crew overcomes challenges

Despite some soaked firefighters and a frozen fire hydrant, crews managed to douse a small blaze at Huber’s Furniture Monday.

Firefighters were called to the manufacturer near Swan Lake just before 3 p.m. Monday, after a compressor caught fire.

“We definitely had some challenges with the cold weather,” said BX-Swan Lake chief Bill Wacey.

“One of the hydrants was frozen solid so we had to hook up to one further down the road.”

Meanwhile the sprinkler system took down the brunt of the fire, but also caused some challenges.

“The sprinkler system was not able to be shut down so that made for some very wet firefighters,” said Wacey, while trying to warm up his hands in the frigid temperatures.

Approximately 30 employees were working inside the building at the time of the incident, but all escaped uninjured. They have since returned to work.

“Just extremely minor damage,” said owner Ed Huber, adding that the compressor was a back up.

“We have an extremely good fire suppression system.”
