A residential garage in Coldstream is nothing but a smouldering ruin.

Firefighters were called to the 9100 block of Northcott Drive at about 2 p.m. Sunday.

"Witnesses saw smoke from Aberdeen Road," said Shane Code, Coldstream fire chief.

"Two women came in to here and eyeballed it and then went to the home to see if anyone was home. They found an 18-year-old who was unaware of the fire."

Firefighters converged on the garage but they were forced back my multiple explosions.

"It sounded like Baghdad," said Code, who isn't sure if the explosions were caused by flammable liquids inside the garage or possibly ammunition.

"Once the explosions ended, we slowly moved in and the structure caved in on itself."

Inside the garage were two vehicles and two motorcycles.

There was no concern about the fire spreading to the residence.

"It is out of the way enough so we were fairly comfortable with things," said Code.

The property owner is out of town and the renters of the home, the teen's parents, were not home at the time.

A cause for the fire has not been determined at this time.
