Vernon Vipers rally to stun West Kelowna 3-2 in overtime
Defenceman Riley Guenther snapped a shot from the slot past West Kelowna goalie Andy Desautels at 3:34 of the second overtime period to give the Vernon Vipers a 3-2 win over the Warriors in BCHL action Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.
The goal came as forward Dexter Dancs tried a wraparound on Desautels but the puck slid out to the slot where Guenther one-timed a shot for the winner.
Dancs forced overtime with 12.7 seconds left in regulation time when he poked a puck past Desautels with the Vipers on a powerplay and goalie Austin Smith on the bench for an extra attacker, giving Vernon a two-man advantage.
Braden Pears, on a powerplay, and Seb Lloyd scored 1:39 apart midway through the first period to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead in front of 1,916 fans.
Tyler Povoloskie scored on a second period breakaway following a great stretch pass from Vipers defenceman Kenny Citron.
Austin Smith made 37 saves to pick up the win as West Kelowna outshot Vernon 39-37.
The win moved the third-place Vipers to within four points of front-running Penticton and West Kelowna, and five points ahead of fourth place Merritt.
