Coldstream resident dies from avalanche injuries

UPDATE FROM VERNON RCMP, Sunday, March 9:

Vernon RCMP have advised the 34-year-old man from Coldstream has died in hospital. The case has now been turned over to the B.C. Coroners Service.

Media is reporting the individual is A.J. Cleary, a nurse at Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

UPDATE FROM VERNON RCMP, 7:45 P.M. SATURDAY, MARCH 8:

On March 8, 2013 at about 3 p.m.  the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP detachment out of Lumby responded to a report of a snowmobiler caught in an avalanche nearthe Keefer Lake Resort.  Initial investigation revealed a sole male rider on a snowmobile was buried in the avalanche.

Vernon Search & Rescue crews were deployed to the scene.  The emergency services at the resort assisted in the recovery of the 34-year-old resident of the North Okanagan.

The lone rider of the snowmobile was treated by ambulance personnel, and then airlifted to Kelowna General Hospital where he is listed in serious condition.

The RCMP is continuing to investigate this file, and it is anticipated the next update will be Monday morning.

One person has been caught in an avalanche east of Cherryville.

Vernon Search and Rescue and the RCMP received a report Saturday afternoon of an avalanche five kilometres east of Keefer Lake in the Monashee Pass.

"One person is buried. WSe're not sure if they were skiing or snowmobiling," said Leigh Pearson, with Vernon SAR.

Full details are not known as the search crew has not returned to base yet.

When asked about the condition of the individual, Pearson said, "It's not good but I'm not sure if it's a fatality or if they're badly injured."
