The Vernon Farmers Market is extremely popular with locals and now it has harvested provincial recognition.

VFM has been named market of the year by the B.C. Association of Farmers Markets in the large category (61-plus vendors per week).

“I’m so proud of our market and the community supporting us,” said Ingrid Baron, VFM manager.

“I’m also so proud of our vendors.”

Baron believes the Vernon market was partially recognized because of the commitment to promote North Okanagan produce and crafts.

“We stay very local and we have a good mixture of items,” she said.

“We have a little bit of everything.”

VFM has also taken steps to embrace the community by hosting special events, supporting the food bank and providing a bursary to a local student.

“The market has been connected with the community for more than 30 years,” said Baron.

The Vernon Farmers Market is currently meeting indoors Mondays at the Schubert Centre from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until March 24 or 31.

The outdoor market at Kal Tire Place begins April 17.

The B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets recently held its inaugural awards program.

“This is a great initiative to recognize the people who make local food available at a grassroots level in B.C.,” said Elizabeth Quinn, BCAFM executive director.
