Morning Star brings home silver
So close to being the best.
The Morning Star finished second in the B.C. Lottery Corporation Newspaper Excellence Award for its circulation category (highest) by only a quarter of a point at the annual B.C. Yukon Community Newspaper Association’s Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards, held at Richmond’s River Rock Resort.
North Vancouver’s North Shore News edged out The Morning Star, 88.50 to 88.25, in scoring by the category judge. The Abbotsford News, like The Morning Star, a Black Press publication, placed third.
The Morning Star finished third in the same category a year ago.
“A clean, crisp and comprehensive news package with good photographs and strong sports coverage,” wrote the judge about The Morning Star’s entry.
“Well-designed, well-written, and relevant, The Morning Star also has a healthy classified section and op-ed section, both of which show strong community involvement. Good work.”
Said Morning Star publisher Ian Jensen, who collected the award Saturday along with managing editor Glenn Mitchell: “It’s a great honour to be a top-three finalist two years in a row, but that shows the dedication and hard work every single person at the paper puts into the product. And I know we’re going to continue to strive to be the best in the province.”
There are 11 judging criteria for 100 available points in the general excellence category. The Morning Star finished ahead of the North Shore News in five categories and three items were tied.
Morning Star reporter/photographer Roger Knox was a finalist in the best sports photo (circulation 25,000 and over) category, and his shot of a runner stumbling at the finish line at the elementary track and field championships placed third.
The BCYCNA has been hosting the Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards for almost a century.
Dedicated to celebrating excellence amongst its member newspapers, the accolades recognize all aspects of the newspaper industry, including production, publishing, reporting, editing, advertising, photography, website design and community contribution.
