Fire deemed suspicious
A former crematorium was laid to rest as it went up in smoke Sunday night.
Firefighters were called to the one-storey commercial building blaze in the 1200 block of Kalamalka Lake Road Sunday at 11:15 p.m.
“It was through the roof,” said Jack Blair, Vernon Fire Rescue deputy chief.
“It was quite a large and destructive fire.”
Crews contained the blaze, protecting businesses near the old brick structure which was once a crematorium, a garden centre and a car lot.
The building was currently being used for storage, but there was also believed to be some unauthorized activity.
“We’d had reports that there were transients in there,” said Blair.
What caused the blaze is still undetermined.
“It’s certainly a suspicious fire and we’re still investigating that,” said deputy chief Lawrie Skolrood.
