Negotiator ends standoff

Five people are in Kelowna RCMP custody for unrelated matters after police zeroed in on the suspects in a Monday morning home invasion robbery.

The investigation revealed the case could have ties to Vernon.

On Monday at 8:55 a.m. Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of a home invasion in the 1100 block of Findlay Road.

“A 41-year-old Kelowna man was at home in bed when two men kicked in the door and threatened him at gunpoint,” said Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Const. Kris Clark.

“The two suspects fled the scene with a small amount of cash and could not be located. The two men were later identified by police and efforts continued to bring them into custody. Police eventually tracked the pair to a residence on the 700 block of Bernard Avenue.”

Due to the nature of the call and the risk to public safety, the Southeast District Emergency Response Team was engaged and established containment around the residence.

An RCMP negotiator made contact with the suspects who eventually surrendered peacefully at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Three other individuals were arrested inside the home for unrelated offences and police seized stolen property believed to be associated to several investigations in Vernon and Penticton.

All five were expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
