Townhouse fire cause unknown

Determining what led flames to roar through two Vernon homes is proving difficult.

Investigators were back on scene Tuesday at Hawk’s Landing on Mt. Revelstoke Place, where two townhomes sustained significant fire damage Saturday.

“There’s a lot of damage, especially in the fire’s area of origin,” said Lawrie Skolrood, a Vernon deputy fire chief.

“Whether we find something remains to be seen.”

While the cause is not known yet, one possibility has been ruled out.

“The barbecue was disconnected and was not part of the fire,” said Skolrood.

Hampering the investigation has been the structural integrity of parts of the residences.

“There are huge holes in the deck and there’s a 30-foot drop,” said Jack Blair, a deputy fire chief.

Five firefighters were part of the initial response at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday and about 25 firefighters in total were on scene.

From the deck, the flames spread into the attic of one of the units. The fire was fuelled by strong winds and natural gas.

“There’s  raw wood and a confined space and that generates heat,” said Blair of the attic.

Beyond the two units that sustained widespread damage the siding on another unit was melted and there’s smoke damage in a fourth unit.

It’s believed the damage could be valued at about $750,000.

Emergency Social Services provided assistance to the occupants of three units.
