Coldstream residents are being reminded that they’re not alone.

There have been reports of bobcat sightings in the community recently, including in the Giles Drive/Coldstream Creek Road area.

“It has been around for a while,” said Jim Garlick, Coldstream’s mayor, of a bobcat frequenting his yard.

“I saw it last fall in our garden and a couple days ago I took pictures. There are lots of quail around so it is likely hunting.”

According to WildSafe B.C., bobcats are elusive cats that are very rarely seen by people.

“Bobcats have tufted ears and large, snowshoe-like feet similar to their larger cousin, the lynx. Strictly carnivorous, bobcats prey upon a variety of animals including rodents, small mammals and birds. Formidable hunters, bobcats often take down prey larger than themselves,” states the agency.

Besides the bobcat, Garlick suspects he saw a lynx in the field next to his house almost two weeks ago.

“I walked up behind it before noticing it. I thought it was a coyote at first from behind, until it turned around,” he said.

“We both got a surprise. They are not very afraid. They just walked away when they noticed me.”
