Okanagan College students and staff were forced out of class as a suspicious package was investigated.

The evacuation occurred at 10:49 a.m. Thursday at the Vernon campus.

“A student noticed what they thought was suspicious equipment with wires sticking out. They were concerned and notified security,” said Christine Ulmer, Okanagan College’s acting director of public affairs.

Security then got a hold of administration and a decision was made to call 911 and evacuate the building.

The dispatch e-mail to the Coldstream Fire Department came in as a bomb threat.

However, the origin of the item was determined before the fire department arrived on scene.

“The equipment was for one of our electricians and it was left unattended,” said Ulmer.

Ulmer insists the student did the right thing.

“It’s a good thing that people keep an eye out on our campuses,” she said.
