More suites are proposed for a new housing development in Armstrong.

Third reading had been given to a bylaw, following a public hearing on the matter, that proposed to amend property in the 3200 block of Okanagan Street from country residential to multiple unit residential-apartment. This would allow developer Patrick Place to build a three-storey, 18-unit apartment-style housing building.

Place now wants to increase the units from 18 to possibly as many as 24.

“The building envelope would remain the same,” said planner Hazel Christy in a report to Armstrong council.

The building also proposes underground parking.

“The increase in density proposed triggers the need for a further public hearing, and therefore a further public hearing is required before any decisions are made in that regard,” said Christy.

The public hearing will be held Monday, March 27, at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers.

New McDonald’s?

A public hearing will also be held Monday, March 27, at 7 p.m. in chambers over a zoning bylaw amendment application.

McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada wants to amend the present zoning of its property in the 3200 block of Smith Drive from town centre commercial to highway and service commercial to allow for drive-through food services.

The application is for McDonald’s to build a new drive-through building to replace the existing restaurant, which is more than 20 years old.

“The existing McDonald’s building was completed prior to the adoption of the previous zoning bylaw, where drive-through food services are not a permitted use in the town centre commercial zone,” explained Christy. “The previous town centre zone specifically excluded drive-through restaurants from the list of permitted uses.”

The amendment application gives McDonald’s an opportunity to “introduce an updated builidng configuration consistent with the newer restaurants format and McCafe branding, and will include the provision of a new dual-lane drive-through facility and parking area.

Both applications received unanimous support for second reading, allowing each to move to the public hearing stage.
