A sudden vacancy has the City of Vernon shifting staff.

Kevin Bertles, the long-time director of financial services, submitted his letter of retirement Wednesday and it became effective Thursday.

Debra Law, manager of financial planning and reporting, has been appointed as acting director and chief financial officer, and Mund says there’s no rush to hire someone permanently.

“We have some very capable people who can fill the position. We will look at that first and see if anyone wants the job,” he said.

“If we can’t find somebody (internally), we will source somebody.”

Will Pearce, chief administrative officer, says it could take a couple of months before a final decision is made on the director’s position long-term.

“Deb is a very competent professional and we will see where we are at,” said Pearce.

“The corporation is very fortunate to have professional individuals like Deb to step in.”

“It’s quick but I don’t make a judgment on how people leave,” said Mayor Akbal Mund.

Bertles, who couldn’t be reached for comment, had been with the city for 15 years.

During his time, Bertles and his staff were recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award four years in a row and the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting six years in a row. He was also recognized by GFOA for leading the budgeting and financial reporting processes.
