The Feed Enderby and District Food Bank is expanding to meet demand.

The volunteer operation is shifting from the St. Andrew’s United Church basement to space at 907 Belvedere St.

“The number of people using the food bank continues to grow,” said Scott Hemenway, chairperson.

“We’re averaging 90 households a month which is 200 people.”

One of the challenges with the church basement was all supplies had to be put away after the food bank closed for the month, whereas the new location will allow items to be left out.

“The amount of food we need has increased. There’s a lot of work to prepare the food,” said Hemenway, adding that freezers and refrigerators will be installed.

“We will be able to keep our product on hand.”

The new location will be ready for May 19 food hampers, and remodelling is currently underway.

“We have taken out a wall to open up the area,” said Hemenway.

Residents are asked to donate furniture for the reception and waiting areas, including two couches, several chairs, a side table, desk and chair.

About 96 per cent of the monthly rent has been covered by two donors, but more assistance is appreciated.

“Our Christmas stock is gone and we are now purchasing food,” said Hemenway, adding that the community always rallies behind the food bank.

“We have been very thankful to the United Church for its support.”

Mayor Greg McCune believes the expanded food bank is necessary to help residents in need.

“We want to make things easier for the community,” he said.

“This will provide an opportunity for the volunteers to be in a great environment.”
