For their birthdays, most kids ask for the newest toys and the hottest gadgets.

But BX Elementary student Nathan Campbell, who recently turned 11, asked for a donation to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation, with a focus on helping sick children and babies.

“I think that sick babies are the future,” said Campbell. “They should have a long life.”

This is the second year Campbell has requested a donation for his birthday and he raised $215, which his parents matched for a total donation of $430. Last year, Campbell raised $420.

“I’m donating for the future,” said Campbell, adding that he hopes his donations help the community as a whole.

And it’s a birthday wish that his mother Beth is proud of.

“I’m very proud of him,” she said. “I think community help is part of development.

“It’s nice that we can do this and help spread the word. To give back a little bit is a nice thing.”

Campbell hopes to continue to give back to the community and help in whatever ways he can.

“I think I have enough. Maybe the other kids deserve more.”
