Senior government funding is rolling into two North Okanagan communities.

A grant will allow Spallumcheen to move ahead with road upgrades while funding will go towards a community project in Vernon.

In Spallumcheen, the federal and provincial governments are each contributing $1.5 million to a Pleasant Valley Road upgrade while $1.5 million is also coming from the township.

“When public infrastructure in many of our smaller communities is in need of repair or upgrade, the high costs associated are often difficult for a community alone to bear,” said Todd Stone, B.C.’s transportation minister.

“However, when senior levels of government act together, we can facilitate these important infrastructure improvements and build stronger communities throughout B.C.”

In Vernon, a $19,430 age-friendly grant will support a local community garden.

“There is a certain satisfaction that only comes from planting a seed and watching it grow,” said Eric Foster, Vernon-Monashee MLA.

“The community garden that will be created through the age-friendly grant, will help encourage activity among our community’s seniors as well as provide them an opportunity to connect with others.”

This two-part project will work on improving accessibility to the Vernon Community Garden and develop new programming to engage seniors and encourage them to use the space.

A best-practices guide will also be developed to facilitate upgrades to Vernon’s two other community gardens.
