Update: 3:50 p.m.

When police arrived on scene of a fire early Monday morning flames were spreading across hedges and onto a nearby small out building.

The cause of the fire is not known; however Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey states a lit cigarette has not yet been ruled out by investigators as a potential contributing factor.

“Residents in the area report that a reasonable amount of foot traffic on a nearby pathway is not uncommon,” he said.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze promptly before it spread to any nearby homes. No injuries were reported.

Quick response by Kelowna firefighters stopped a hedge fire from spreading early Monday morning.

Crews were called to Hollywood road in Rutland about 2 a.m. after neighbours were awoken to large flames and the smell of smoke.

Several hedges were destroyed by the fire, although crews managed to stop the flames from spreading to any nearby structures.

It’s unclear how the blaze started, although police were called in to investigate.
