An 18-year-old Kelowna teen is facing criminal charges after she allegedly caused a large accident Friday evening, while drunk behind the wheel.

On Feb. 24, 2017 at approximately 9:45 p.m., Kelowna RCMP officers came across a two-vehicle collision in the intersection of Harvey Avenue and Dilworth Drive.

Information obtained from witnesses at the scene indicate that a blue Volkswagen Jetta, which had been eastbound on Harvey Avenue, failed to obey the traffic light at the intersection of Dilworth Drive and collided with a southbound black Infiniti Q50.

“RCMP believe that there are multiple factors which may have contributed to this crash,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“The ensuing investigation has allowed police to confirm that alcohol is believed to be one of those contributing factors. Investigators also suspect that speed may have also played a role.”

The driver of the Volkswagen, an 18-year-old Kelowna woman, faces potential charges.

Her passenger, an 18-year-old Kelowna man, sustained injuries believed to be non-life-threatening in nature.

Two of the four occupants of the Infiniti were also transported from the crash scene to hospital with what police believe to be non-life-threatening injuries.

If you witnessed this crash and have not yet spoken to police you are asked to contact Const. Brad Smith of the RCMP Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) of the West Kelowna Detachment at 250-768-2880.
