The actions of a neighbour have Coldstream officials scrambling.

The district is looking at how to manage traffic if the City of Vernon shuts down Kalamalka Lake Road, between Browne Road and the Coldstream boundary, for a couple of months this year.

“I’ve had some e-mails and phone calls from residents,” said Mayor Jim Garlick, pointing out that Vernon’s Kalamalka Lake Road is a major link for Coldstream motorists going to work or shopping.

“People are concerned it will be completely closed for so long.”

The City of Vernon has made no decisions yet on a possible closure because of infrastructure work and is consulting with businesses to determine the possible timeline for a road closure and how to minimize the impact.

If Kalamalka Lake Road is shut down, Coldstream will look how to handle flow along alternate routes, such as College Way to Highway 97.

“We will need signage to inform people of the routes. We need a traffic plan in place,” said Garlick.

However, some challenges could exist as Coldstream motorists try to get their way into Vernon.

“Husband Road is more of a residential area so we will have to look at how to manage it,” said Garlick.

Coldstream staff have had discussions with their Vernon counterparts about the potential Kalamalka Lake Road closure.
