Lumby taxpayers won’t help cover infrastructure costs at the local campground.

Council has denied a request from the Lions Club to share in the cost of having the Lions Campground bridge inspected and rated for weight.

“The bridge was donated for free by the village. They should be responsible for lease hold improvements,” said Mayor Kevin Acton of the club.

“When they make a profit (from the campground), they should be responsible for the upkeep.”

B.C. Hydro recently refused to cross the bridge because it hadn’t been assessed and weight restrictions weren’t posted.

The Lions hired a company to identify the weight limitations of the bridge and signage was posted.

“The total cost is $1,370, which should have been the village’s responsibility when the bridge was originally installed three years ago,” said Garry Redel, Lions president, in a letter.

“However, a 75 per cent charge to the village seems reasonable to us now.”

The club had support from Coun. Nick Hodge.

“The village uses the bridge to access the ball park and for other activities. I thought we could share the cost,” said Hodge.
