Oyama pays tribute to Dickie

Owen Dickie is being remembered as someone who put Oyama first.

Dickie, Oyama’s representative on Lake Country council, died Monday from cancer at the age of 61.

“It doesn’t seem real. We will miss him,” said Deb Butler, an Oyama Community Club member.

Dickie and his wife Marj first most to Oyama in 1989 and he immediately got involved in the community.

He as active in Oyama Fun Day as well as Christmas and Halloween activities at the community hall. He also spent countless hours helping with maintenance at the hall and he was instrumental in the community garden.

As Oyama’s council representative since 2011, Dickie took forward issues of concern and placed an emphasis on improved facilities such as the Pioneer Park playground.

“He was a doer and he was always there. He always had an idea to move things forward,” said Butler.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Oyama Community Hall.

It’s not known yet if Lake Country will proceed with a byelection to fill Dickie’s Oyama council seat.
