Parking has become a $5 million business at Kelowna's airport.

According to a report to go to city council Monday, in 2015, drivers who parked their vehicles at YLW spent $5.3 million, and the figure is expected to be even higher for 2016 at an estimated $5.6 million.

While the parking lots at the airport are operated by a private firm, the city receives the majority of that money under a contract with the operator.

City staff are recommending the contract be renewed with Royal Star Enterprises for another five years given that the last contract expired in August 2016 and needs to be renewed.

Royal Star has held the contract to operate parking at the airport since 1989.
