Lumby may tighten the reins on how many pets residents can have.

Several complaint letters have been received about numerous animals on some properties, and particularly feral cats.

“We have directed staff to look at other municipalities on how they handle companion animals,” said Mayor Kevin Acton.

Among the concerns about the animals is feces in neighbouring yards.

“The issue of limiting companion animals such as cats, dogs, rabbits, and other animals is done in

several communities,” said Lee Elliott, bylaw enforcement officer, in a report.

“One consideration is for Lumby to be able to fine owners who, after being educated on the bylaw, continue to neglect to adhere to the bylaw. When it comes to pets, people are very protective and many pets are seen as family members. As reported from Vernon, these can be hotly contentious issues and require considerable time and effort to resolve.”

It’s also possible that the village could have animals spayed or neutered, to prevent breeding, and then pass the cost on to owners.

“We all love pets we we don’t want to deny anyone companion animals but there’s a difference between responsible pet ownership and not,” said Acton.

“We want to create something that leads to healthy lifestyles for everyone involved, including the animals.”
